David Letterman’s request gets granted

Talk show host David Letterman wants a sandwich named after him. Michigan based burger restaurant obliges.

Jaws Jumbo Burgers in Farmington Hills, Michigan, Home of The Thank You Jay Leno Burger and The We Miss You Conan O’ Brien Burger has just added a burger named in honor of David Letterman. The “I Want A Sandwich Named After Me” Dave Letterman Burger (AKA The Big Dave) was created by the Jaws crew after their customers told them about Dave’s request (Feb 25th show) to have a sandwich named after him. The “I Want A Sandwich Named After Me” Dave Letterman Burger is fresh made to order Two 1/3lb Ground Sirloin Patties ,4 Strips of Bacon, American & Swiss-American Cheese, Thousand Island Dressing, fresh lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, pickles & grilled onions on a buttered toasted bun. The single patty is named The Paul Shaffer Burger. In April of 2009, The Thank You Jay Leno/Kevin Eubanks Burger was created after Jay did the free shows for the Michigan unemployed. Last year, The We Miss You Conan O’Brien/Andy Richter Burger was created to congratulate Conan on his new TBS show. As with Jay and Conan, Jaws Jumbo Burgers wishes to invite Dave to an all expenses paid trip to Michigan to try his special Dave Letterman Burger or the Jaws Crew will come to the show to make (The Big Dave ) burgers for he and his studio audience. Making Jay an Offer

The Jaws Crew never gives up. The Jay Leno Show aired in September and we saw how the show would send people out to do funny bits, so we thought Jay could send someone. We thought of a new angle to try to get some media attention and Jay’s attention. So we came with The Jaws Jumbo Burgers Makes Jay Leno A Business Offer. A cute little video offering Jay Leno his very own Jaws Jumbo Burgers to put in Burbank so he and his audience could try the Leno Burger. In the midst of my trying to get attention, critics started saying that The Jay Leno Show was in the tanking, and it interfered with news affiliates which had a domino effect on the Tonight Show with Conan O’brien which eventually turned into a big fiasco. I sent the Jaws Jumbo Burgers Makes Jay Leno A Business Offer to Detroit News columnist Neal Rubin and on January 24, 2010 he published an online article titled Burger Joint has deal for Leno If Stupid NBC plan fails. We were so excited and the story also got picked up by bloggers which was great. A restaurant industry newspaper Nations Restaurant News wrote an article entitled Offering Leno some options. It will be one year in April since Mr. Leno free concerts and I still continue to send out press releases trying reel Jay Leno into Jaws Jumbo Burgers. Customers still ask if Jay has been here or if we have heard anything. A phone call would be nice or even a thank you letter would be nice. Next up… a customer visiting LA is on the waiting list tickets to the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She has our press package and she said she’ll get it to him.

I like to take this time to thank Mr. Leno

Jaws Jumbo Burger was the only company that thanked Jay Leno from the very beginning. The following Sunday Jeff Bouchard a friend of Jay’s from Gail & Rice takes an full page ad out in the Detroit Free Press Thanking Jay Leno. Umm…I wonder where he got that from. He thanked Jay Leno on someone else’s dime because the Palace where Jay performed paid for the ad. How sincere is that? We found out the from the Detroit News article that Leno spent his last night in Detroit at his friend Jeff Bouchard’s restaurant Bo Jack’s having a burger. Before going to the airport he made a stop at Arby’s. Umm…. of course if Mr. Leno came to Jaws Jumbo Burgers and had The Thank You Jay Leno Burger he would not have been hungry until dinner the next day. Now I was sending out press releases like crazy and multiple times inviting Jay Leno and his wife Mavis to come back to Michigan to try the burger named in his honor all expenses paid. Some press people told me to take them off my email list because I sent them a release more than 3 times. I also emailed and snail mailed the Jay Leno show. We still didn’t hear anything from Leno or his camp. July of 2009 we took out ¼ page ad in the Los Angeles Daily News hoping that Jay Leno would come because he had some free time until his new 10 pm show started in September. The ad offered to fly Jay and his wife Mavis all expenses paid on behalf of Jaws Jumbo Burgers back to MI. One of our customers gave a press package to Jay Leno at the Las Vegas Auto Show. When our customer handed Jay the package, Jay stated that he had the Jaws Burger Invite hanging in his office. I’ll be the first to say that Jay Leno is definitely the hardest working man in show biz. The show dates for his comedy tours are crazy busy. He's gotta have an assistant that can call and say, “Hey”! Mr. Leno says, “Knock it off”! or something. Right? Checkout the Jay Leno Invite Video.

Oh My Gosh Were On TV

Channel 20 called the day of Jay Leno’s arrival. They wanted a unique twist on the Leno’s coming to Michigan and we served up a great story idea. The news guy was a one man crew. The story aired later that night with much anticipation it was short and sweet. The news guy was also going to Auburn Hills to do an interview with Jay Leno at the Palace and we asked if he might give Jay Leno a letter for us asking him to come and try the burger named in his honor. He said he would and he also asked if he take Mr. Leno a Leno burger too. We thought that was a great idea and then we realized that the Palace is fifty minutes away from Jaws Jumbo Burgers and that wasn’t such hot idea after all (pun intended). We never saw that media man again even though we gave him a free Thank You Jay Leno Burger with fries and drink to tote. The station he works at is about 5 miles away from us. We also asked that he give us a copy of the segment he did on Jaws. We are still waiting. Ummm…Things that make you say umm… Now needless to say we were super busy before Jay Leno and after Leno’s arrival and departure. The day Mr. Leno was leaving a Channel 7 WXYZ photog stopped by to get b-roll. We offered him a Leno burger, but he was a vegetarian. Some dumb luck… this guy was not super excited about this burger at all. Later that night we watched the news cast to see if we made it in the lineup and we were pushed out by a cop that pulled a man out his car seconds before it exploded. We were so disappointed when we heard Jay Leno left town and didn’t call or stop by. We had a reserved table tent sign for Leno and everything. Oh well.

Creating the Buzz

I sent out press releases inviting Jay Leno and his entire crew to eat at Jaws Jumbo Burgers anytime, any day, and at any hour for free after the shows. We invited Jay to try the burger named in his honor. I spent the whole afternoon Sunday posting the Jay Leno information anywhere I could for free on foodie websites, calendar events, and the local press circuit. The burger was going to be two third-pound ground sirloin patties, mushrooms, four strips of bacon, and double Swiss- American cheese which was delivered by mistake by one of our food suppliers We just started selling grilled subs so that took care of the mushrooms. The price for a Leno Burger $10.25, but specially priced at $7.89 which stood for the dates that Leno would be in town. The first glimmer of hope that all my hard work paid off was Farmington Hills Observer Local Link titled A Leno Burger. Boy… were we excited! We received various newspaper articles about the Leno Burger. The best media was when Rebecca a producer from 104.3 WOMC the Oldies channel called. She scheduled an interview with us the week before Jay Leno’s arrival. We had to be up extra early that day for the morning show, but the time did not bother us because of the excitement. We got to Jaws Jumbo Burgers at 6am and then we made 5 Thank You Jay Leno Burgers, 5 Large Fresh Squeezed Lemonades and 3 Giant Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies. We even made a special container with holes so our Jay Leno Burgers would not get soggy. It was funny watching Paul and Darryl drill holes into this big plastic bin. We headed off to the radio station and we turned the channel onto 104.3 and lo and behold the DJ’s were talking about us. Paul was interviewed by Dick Purtan, Big Al, and Rebecca too. Paul gave the most excellent interview ending with Big Al asking Paul that if Jay Leno is listening what would you say? The Birth of the Thank You Jay Leno Burger

Back in March of 2009 I was laying in bed watching my favorite TV show line up on channel 38 WADL, In the Heat of the Night, The Jefferson’s and finally Good Times. The Good Times episode was so funny, JJ thought he a VD and Thelma and Michael had to help their brother figure out what to do. The only solution was to go to the clinic. While down there JJ obviously uncomfortable starts to chat with a guy played by a very young Jay Leno who asks, “What are you here for?” JJ replies, “I have a cold”. The Jay Leno character says,” That’s funny cuz we’re all here for VD. The laughter ensues from the studio audience and the rest of the show becomes a public service message. Earlier in the day Detroit News columnist Neal Rubin wrote about the ungrateful City Council Member Martha Reeves criticizing Jay Leno’s free concert performances in Auburn Hills, by saying he was not helping lift Detroiters spirits up, because he was not actually performing in Detroit. Of course we at Jaws Jumbo Burgers thought that was very stupid of her to say considering there are no celebrities that would come here to Michigan on their own dime and vacation to do anything for us without getting something out of it, not even the homegrown ones including Ms. Reeves of Martha Reeves & The Vandellas So Neal Rubin in his article was saying can’t we just say Thank You and that was our sentiment as well. So while Good Times was going off, I was feeling as if this was fate, an omen, the universe, God telling me this is no coincidence…Jay coming to Michigan to cheer the out of work, the Neil Rubin article, and seeing Jay Leno on Good Times this must mean something. That night I gave birth to the thought The Thank You Jay Leno Burger, to show Mr. Leno that everybody is not a heel in Michigan. The next day I shared with the rest of the Crew members and they thought it was an excellent idea.

Customers ask Jaws Jumbo Burgers...Jay Leno... has he come yet?

It will be a year April 9th and customers still ask us at Jaws Jumbo Burgers if Jay Leno ever came in to try the burger named in his honor, as if we would hide such a humongous secret. Jaws Jumbo Burgers, is a very popular burger joint in Farmington Hills, MI., We created the burger when City Council Member Martha Reeves criticized Jay Leno’s free concert performances in Auburn Hills, by saying he was not helping lift Detroiters spirits up, because he was not actually performing in Detroit. The Jaws Crew thought that was ridiculous considering how many celebrities actually come to Michigan without getting something out of it. We came up with the Thank You Jay Leno Burger and offered it to Leno and his crew at anytime, any day, and at any hour for free after the shows. Leno or his crew never showed up, but do to the local press the burger became a popular menu item with two third-pound ground sirloin patties, mushrooms, four strips of bacon, and double Swiss- American cheese for a $10.25. We started a campaign that has included practically everything except stalk Leno. We invited Jay Leno and his wife Mavis to come back to Michigan all expenses paid. We sent emails, postcards, letters, had a customer deliver the info personally to Jay Leno at the Las Vegas Auto Show, started a Thank You Jay Leno Facebook page, and they even took out an ad in the Los Angeles Daily News for $1500. The restaurant received some more attention from the press when we offered Jay his very own Jaws Jumbo Burgers franchise before the Leno & Conan Showdown for the Tonight Show began. The Detroit News headlines read Burger Joint has plans for Leno If Stupid NBC plan fails, Crain’s Business Journal Farmington Hills burger joint cooks up deal for Jay Leno and Nation Restaurant News Offering Leno some options. Various blogs picked up these stories too, and we sent these quirky stories to the Jay Leno website and still to no avail, there has been no answer from Leno or his camp.
